case study
Turning raw operational data into automated work orders.
A mining operation produces a lot of asset data. From drills to pumps to motors, the customer needed a way to wade through the data and use it to monitor performance and dispatch maintenance teams.
use cases
NLINK can solve a number of operational challenges.
Maintenance processing
Maintenance Notifications or Malfunction Reports in SAP can be created automatically for breakdowns or out-of-range readings as registered by the equipment monitoring devices.
Sample applications may include:
- Stronger than normal vibration readings on pumps or compressors
- Weaker than normal electrical output from generators
- Equipment breakdown (non-functioning) for any equipment
Production planning
Process planning tools for resource, recipe and process management, as well as process planning and production information management.
Fully support production planning by receiving planned orders from SAP and then generating real-time process data during production to allow further processing, such as:
- Materials Management
- Quality Management
- Process Costing
- Generation of Electronic Batch Records
Inspection readings in assembly and testing
In the manufacturing of actuators and control devices where torque readings need to be tested, or in process industries where quality control data needs to be tracked, the devices that capture these readings can automatically report the readings into the SAP QM module as Inspection Results.
Sample applications may include:
- Operating Output Torque Ranges / Maximum-Torque output reading for an Electric Actuator
- Operating Supply Pressure Ranges for Pneumatic Actuators
Inventory reconciliation on tank farms
Through the use of various OPC compliant devices and gauges that monitor the tank farms and provide feedback on tank information, inventory levels in a tank farm can be automatically interfaced with SAP’s Inventory Management module.
Sample applications may include:
- Reporting differences between inventory levels in the tank versus expected levels in SAP
- Reconciling inventory differences between planned consumption and actual consumption in SAP
- Triggering purchase requisitions based on actual tank levels.

Ready to Integrate Your Plant Floor?
Frequently Asked Questions
How do we integrate OPC data with SAP Systems?
The NLINK OPC Connector can connect to any OPC DA or UA server, providing bi-directional, real-time data exchange between the OPC server and the NLINK server. NLINK then bridges the gap between the control layer data, through mapping, routing and transforming the data before applying business logic and sending it to SAP. Thus, manufacturing control engineers can expose any data from the control layer with SAP and pass any SAP data down to the control layer. This is industrial middleware.
How does OPC to SAP integration impact data accuracy and reliability?
Today, control systems (PLCs, DCSs and SCADAs) and intelligent devices are rarely integrated with robust, real-time bi-directional interfaces with SAP.
The NLINK OPC Connector allows any such system or device to be connected to SAP via the OPC protocol. Once connected, appropriate data from the control layer can be exchanged with SAP in real-time, dramatically improving accuracy, and when using an ultra-reliable industrial middleware also increasing reliability.
What are the security implications of integrating OPC with SAP?
End-to-end connectivity is defined by control system to OPC server to NLINK to SAP. The NLINK OPC Connector operates as an OPC client, reading or writing OPC Tag values. This effectively isolates the control system from NLINK. NLINK is a secure enterprise application and the methods used to connect to SAP can also be selected with enhanced security in mind. A typical real-time synchronous connection between NLINK and SAP would be established via RFCs and BAPIs. In this case, NLINK accesses SAP as an RFC client in the same way that a regular user does. This, in turn, means that all security and authorization is managed and controlled by the SAP BASIS team as they would secure any other connection. Additional layers of security can be easily added, such as assigning the NLINK user to be a background user, (i.e., no SAP GUI access) and optionally employing SAP’s SNC protocol.
What are the costs associated with OPC to SAP integration?
All of the same costs as any manufacturing plant floor integration plus the cost of the OPC server if not already procured. The real question is what are the costs associated with not developing real-time bi-directional interfaces between the control layer and the SAP system in a manufacturing plant?
